Codd balls” or “Codd marbles” are one of the most prized finds for Northwest beachcombers and sea glass collectors. They come from old soda bottles called Codd-neck bottles, invented in 1872 by English engineer Hiram Codd.
These bottles used a glass marble and a rubber gasket instead of a cork or cap to keep carbonation sealed inside the bottle. The pressure from the soda pushed the marble tightly against the seal. When opened, the marble dropped into a chamber in the neck of the bottle.
Collectors in the Northwest often consider finding a perfectly frosted sea marble the “holy grail” of beachcombing because:
- they are naturally shaped,
- take decades to frost,
- and are much rarer than ordinary sea glass shards.
