Meet Our Northwest Hummingbirds

In the Pacific Northwest — especially around the San Juan Islands, Washington, Oregon, and coastal British Columbia — you're in one of the best hummingbird regions in North America.

Here are the primary hummingbird species you're most likely to encounter:

🌺 COMMON HUMMINGBIRDS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

🟢 Anna's Hummingbird

The year-round resident superstar

  • Most common around western Washington & San Juan Islands
  • Males have brilliant iridescent pink/red heads
  • Extremely territorial and curious
  • Often the first species to try hand-held feeders

Fun fact:

Anna's hummingbirds can survive surprisingly cold temperatures and often stay year-round in the Northwest.

🟠 Rufous Hummingbird

Tiny but aggressive

  • Bright copper/orange coloration
  • Famous for being fearless
  • One of the longest migrations relative to body size on Earth

Migration:

They travel from Mexico to Alaska…every single year.

These little guys are notorious for aggressively defending feeders.

🟣 Black-chinned Hummingbird

More common inland

  • Seen more frequently east of the Cascades
  • Subtle purple throat band on males
  • Calmer personality compared to Rufous

Less common in the San Juans, but occasionally spotted during migration.

🔴 Calliope Hummingbird

The smallest bird in North America — and a rare Pacific Northwest treat during migration season.

Want to meet them up close? Our handmade hand-held hummingbird feeders are crafted from recycled glass and shaped like the flowers these Pacific Northwest species love most.
